Greyhound Racing To Be Banned In NSW!

Greyhound Racing To Be Banned In NSW Have you ever wondered about what happens behind the scenes in the very controversial sport of Greyhound racing? Well, NSW premier Mike Baird obviously has. He has announced that he will ban Greyhound racing from July 1st next year. Why has it been banned? Mike Baird announced a special commission of inquiry which found very scary results. The inquiry was conducted by a former High Court Judge Michael McHugh. The inquiry found that 48,000-68,000 dogs were killed in the past 12 years in NSW because they weren't fast enough of just weren't suitable for racing. Live baiting is widespread with 10 to 20 per cent of trainers engaged in the practice.Greyhound racing NSW had a policy of deliberately misreporting the number of dog injuries and deaths. The ABC Four Corners program exposed the sport with the widespread of extreme animal cruelty of both live bait and dogs. Live Baiting is where instead of using a fluffy ball called the lure, the trainer will use a live animal for the dog to chase. “Certainly not an easy decision,” Mike Baird said. "It's not something that has been taken lightly. But when confronted with Justice McHugh's report, I believe there is no other alternative." he also added. Greyhound trainer's say they will fight until the end to stop the ban blaming the ABC for the decision, not Mr Baird. What Will Happen In Victoria? Victoria's racing minister Martin Pakula said in a post on social media that Victoria's greyhound industry had been on high notice ever since live baiting practices were exposed. Despite several inquiries into the industry, not one recommend shutting down the sport in Victoria. What Do I Think? Personally, I would like it if the sport was banned in all states because it is a very cruel sport to all of the dogs but if this were to happen there would be a lot of dogs without homes and majority of the dogs would probably be put down. There are 6,809 registered greyhounds in NSW that will need to be re-homed, transferred interstate or put down so make sure you look out for adoptions of these beautiful animals.
